The Ducks "Winter Home"

Grandpa and Dave built the ducks their "winter home" in the barn this weekend. We used
scrap wood, netting, a tarp and lots of straw. We tried to catch the ducks to put them in, but only
got Daisy. We tried and tried and tried, but gave up...only to come back the following weekend
and round them all up with food (why didn't we do that in the first place?) Kiera invited her friend, R
to the farm for the weekend.

Barn Update

The approach to the barn is coming along! The retaining
walls are complete and the fill dirt has been spread. The
dirt needs time to settle, then a stamped concrete patio
will be poured.

Right side...Can't wait to plant some flowers
in this little nook!
The left side of the barn...There will be a second
small wall parallel to the side of the retaining wall.
It will be topped with stone and serve as a seat.

Barn Update

The barn has three out of four sides (almost!) complete.
Check out the progress...

Love the contrast of the old and the new!
 Meet BBS...Black Barn Snake
(Kiera named him, but wouldn't go near him!)
We're slooooowly cleaning out the top floor of the barn and
finally made our way over to the snake's home. There are snake
skins/sheds everywhere. It's been his home for quite some time.
We wanted to see how long he really was, so Dave "kindly" tapped
him with a pole and he slithered around. We think he's about five
feet long.

The Barn

Our 100+ year old barn is being restored this summer. It was in disrepair from its old age, lack of  maintenance and after the some of the foundational barn stones were stolen about seven years ago (Who knew there is a black market for barn stone?). The first step of restoration is to install cribbing which raises and securely holds the barn until new posts and beams are installed. Since the cribbing (aka Barn Jenga!) is now in, we were able to safely explore the barn.

Here is where the barn stone should be (that dark, black hole)...the north wall,
also known as the bank wall, had caved in due to old age and lack of maintenance.
The thieves saw that as an opportunity to help themselves to the barn stone along that wall.
Kindly, the rascally robbers cut beams from the interior of the barn to
install their own cribbing to make it "safe" for them to steal the stones.

Who needs a stairway to heaven when you have a ladder to a hay loft?

This is the ladder/stairs on the opposite side of the barn

We'll need a big dumpster and a trip to the scrap yard to clear
this junk from the hay loft.
Just looking around, we found a handmade work bench, a shelving
unit and a bike basket that we want to keep. Hopefully we'll find even
more beauties to salvage.

Love the "live edge" on the beams

A few rusty treasures

Cuteness by Kiera, photo bomb by Dave and Brooke

Dave picked up an old scrap of carpet that was laying
outside of the barn and this little red salamander was
underneath. After a little photoshoot, Kiera returned him
safely to his carpet home.

Peek-a-boo Brooke, we see you!
